STUFF TO SEE, HEAR & READMichele Jackson says: Fifty Years in the Feri Tradition by Cora Anderson - a concise overview of Feri as practiced by the Grandmaster and the clan mother. Corrects a lot of misconceptions about Feri practices and should be required reading for anyone interested in the Feri tradition. This book is still available from the Andersons. If I could only recommend one book on the Feri tradition, this would be it. * Thorns of the Blood Rose by Victor Anderson - Poetry, some of which is well suited for use in ritual and personal devotions. This book is currently out of print, but can be found used occasionally. * The Divine Horseman: The Living Gods of Haiti by Maya Deren - A semi-scholarly study of Haitian Voodoo, a religion whose deities and practices are a significant aspect of Feri as taught by Victor and Cora Anderson. * Tell My Horse by Zora Neale Hurston - Another semi-scholarly study of Haitian Voodoo, Obeah and folk magic of Jamaica. * Huna: A Beginners Guide by Enid Hoffman - Introduction to Huna. Victor sometimes recommends the books of Max Freedom Long, but this is an easier read (doesnt sound as dated and Christian) and it covers a lot of the basics. The Spiral Dance by Starhawk - Good introductory book for beginners with a lot of basic Feri mixed with practices from other traditions. The Dancing Wu - Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics by Gary Zukav - An easy to follow (read that non-mathematical) explanation of Quantum Physics. Confirms a lot of things Shamans have been saying for centuries. Necromonicon by H.P. Lovecraft (Avon Edition Edited by Simon) - Provides background information, comparisons and correspondences, and a brief discussion of the Necronomicon and modern witchcraft. Im sure these books are old hat to many Feris, but I only saw a couple in previous editions of Witch Eye. Those with an asterisk (*) were recommended to me by Victor. Kalessin and Jim Schütte recommend: In addition to Michele Jackson's list of recommended titles, which we highly endorse, below are some of our favorite books on Faerie topics: Fifty Years in the Feri Tradition* by Cora Anderson: Contains valuable insights and information often overlooked by students. Thorns of the Bloodrose* by Victor H. Anderson, GM: a powerful book of Feri liturgy and love poems Tales from the Night Rainbow* by Pali Jae Lee and Koko Willis: A firsthand account of Hawai'ian shamanic ways by a traditional practitioner vs. a white wannabee & cultural thief. Macumba* by Serge Bramly Occult Exercises and Practices by Gareth Knight: Developing etheric sight is a basic requirement for Mastership in Feri. This book provides an excellent repertoire of psychic calisthenics. Out-of-Body Adventures by Rick Stack: The ability to travel "astrally" outside of the physical body and remember factual information is one of three fundamental requirements for Mastership in Feri.Victor recommends Sylvan Muldoon's* work; however, this is my favorite regimen for inducing conscious OOBEs. Several friends have told us that William Buhlman's Adventures Beyond the Body is also excellent. The Fruitful Darkness by Joan Halifax The Spiral Dance by Starhawk: Still the best introduction to Witchcraft today, with some Feri Trad exercises and information included. The Hebrew Myths by Robert Graves and Ralphael Patai (Jim recommends.) Beyond the Quantum by Michael Talbot: A good introduction to new physics. Mysticism and the New Physics by Michael Talbot practically anything by Caitlín & John Matthews People of the Earth: The New Pagans Speak Out by Ellen E. Hopman: Contains an interview with Victor Anderson (and other Faeries). Witches U.S.A. by Susan Roberts (revised edition, Phoenix House 1974): Contains an older interview with Victor from 1970. Green Egg Vol. 28, No. 111 Winter 1995-96 Aradia, the Gospel of the Witches* by Charles G. Leland Call of the Horned Piper by Nigel Jackson: British and Germanic Faerie folk tradition Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler: Contains a lucid description of Victor's initiation, plus some info on Gwydion. FICTION: Into the Green by Charles DeLint The "Earthsea" tetrology by Ursula LeGuin: Great storytelling and sound magical philosophy. Raptor by Gary Jennings*: A rip-roaring adventure about a "thorn" man/woman (sexually explicit)! The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin: A dark, moving love story that challenges our cultural perceptions of gender. The 37th Mandala by Marc Laidlaw: A fictional novel in the tradition of Lovecraft, which has Victor Anderson as a character! Finally in paperback. The Deep by John Crowley (No relation to Aleister.): (Jim recommends.) Titles with an asterisk (*) were recommended by Victor and Cora. MUSIC: (Feri music would perhaps be a separate category, so I'll list just these few favorites for now): Gwydion Pendderwen: Songs for the Old Religion CD and Songbook (available through www.serpentinemusic.com) Sharon Knight: Incantation: my favorite Pagan/Feri CD (also available through www.serpentinemusic.com) MOVIES: Eyes of Fire: An artsy, dark faerie tale, which includes a human transformation into a full-size "Celtic Faerie". Rough Magic: How many principles of Faerie shamanism can you spot in this romantic fantasy? The Divine Horseman: The Living Gods of Haiti by Maya Deren (VHS) Photographing Faeries: (Not to be confused with the recent Paramount movie, Fairy Tale.) This period film is a wonderful love story that defies rational explanations of time and space. The main character gets a second chance with a little help from the Faerie world. Beautiful cinematography, despite the diminutive Victorian faeries.
